Dear Connersville High School Parents, Guardians, and Staff Members,

Recently, we began the construction process at Connersville High School that will include the complete renovation of the natatorium.  During a recent inspection, it was discovered that floor tiles in an office adjacent to the natatorium have tested positive for asbestos. A significant majority, if not nearly all, buildings constructed during the time period in which Connersville High School was built are likely to contain asbestos.

It is very important to note that the asbestos identified in the tile is non-friable. This means it is not airborne, cannot be damaged by human hand, is much less likely to be released, and does not pose a health risk to students, staff, or visitors under normal circumstances. The material is only hazardous in extreme circumstances, such as through ingestion.  With this said, we will still be taking proactive steps to address the situation and keep everyone completely safe.

To ensure the safety of everyone at Connersville High School, the affected tile will be remediated by a licensed third-party contractor that specializes in asbestos abatement. This process will be conducted in full compliance with the regulations set forth by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The abatement process is expected to take 2-3 days.  All necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community will be taken.  During this time, as an additional layer of care, a different third party air quality company will be utilized to monitor building air quality.

We are committed to transparency and keeping you informed. If you have any questions or concerns about this matter, please feel free to contact me directly at (765) 825-2178. Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we work to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone at Connersville High School.

Respectfully,

Jeremy Duncan
