We began our year by making Little Engines that Could with graham cracker bodies, cookie wheels, licorice windows, and cheerio smoke. We also have been baking bread with The Little Red Hen. We are beginning our first grade adventure by studying our community, its workers , and our families. 
What's new?
We will conduct two distance learning projects with the Indianapolis Zoo this spring - Coral Reefs and the Amazon Rainforest. Then the ZooMobile will visit us in May with animals from the zoo. We are also producing a play about LifeCycles.

What's old, but still a good memory?
The 2004-2005 class was awarded 1st place for our claymation video of "The Very Hungry Halloween Caterpillar" at the FCSC and district Media Fair! They also received a first place at the Crossroads of Imagination Film Festival in Bloomington, Indiana this summer. Watch our video. It takes a while to load!)

Our year long theme is "Arthur, Frizzle, and Me" based on the PBS television series and book series by Marc Brown and Scholastic's Magic School Bus series. Arthur will help our class as we learn to read and write. Miss Frizzle and the gang will help us discover, take chances, and "get messy."

is another favorite author. We created a sea creature mystery blog with him and enjoyed his visit to our schools.The Chicago Tribune did a story about blogs in school and came to take photos of us blogging to Ron on his island off the coast of Washington.

Owney, the Traveling Dog, visited us for the 9th year. He arrived on Feb. 23rd and was eager to learn about the Colts!

Owney the Traveling Dog - Owney will be traveling to each of the 50 states and the to our newly elected president. This integrated curricular project includes email and snail-mail activities.Read the story about the real-life Owney.

Valentines Day Card Project - Students partnered with 22 other classrooms in creating and exchanging Valentines. They also made Valentines and sent these to St. Judes Hospital.

Enviroplay - We joined with a school in Wales and in Italy to discuss environmental concerns. A play was created from our discussion. The school in Wales performed the play. (Mrs. Newton was awarded the 2002 Indiana Computer Educator of the Year Runner-Up Award for the creation and use of this project.)

The Great Chocolate Experience IV - M&M Internet project.This project is no longer on line, but is still used in the classroom.

Tooth Tally - an Internet project where schools from across the US, Canada, and Japan keep track of lost teeth during February, March, and April. We have participated in this project 5 years.

The Rain Forest Project - Over the years, our class has participated in many projects. We have traced the travels of Paul Hurteau into the South American rain forest.. We traded artwork with our partner school in Limoncocha, Ecuador.We raised money through popcorn sales to sponsor this project and others to adopt an acre of rain forest near the Amazon River.

St. Patricks Day Lucky Charms Project - Students will sort, count, graph, and share their findings with students across the country.

Around the World Christmas Story - Our class joined with classes from Australia, Ireland, New Jersey, and Illinois to write this special Christmas book. We are book 4.

 

Their teacher is Rebecca Howland. The class is currently enjoying their winter season. (Remember that our seasons are reversed!)
Our Aussie e-pals say..."We are the year 1 and 2 students at Glendale Primary School in Hamersley, Perth, Western Australia. We are a long way away from you but we are starting to learn about your country. Our school is about 6 kilometres from the beach.

Adopt a Whale - Students sold popcorn to earn money to adopt a whale. We chose "Malama." This was our effort to help save the oceans and its wondrous creatures.

Election 2000 - An Internet Project

Our class hosted a national Internet project. This project is suggested for students in grades 1-3. Students were invited to particpate in election activities that led to voting for their favorite book characters, Arthur or Miss Frizzle. After a very tight race, similar to that our our real presidential candidates, Arthur was the winner.
We hosted the project again in 2004. This time, Miss Frizzle was the winner.

Join the "Surf"ari - A Search for Zoo Animals on the Internet

This original webquest is targeted for primary students who are learning about zoo or endangered animals, their characteristics, habitats, and/or the purpose of a zoo. Students will research and become an expert on an animal while using a variety of materials, including web sites. We culminate this quest with a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo. Indy Zoo Biomes

The Cincinnati Zoo is just down the road from us and has lots of interesting animals too!
