Saint
Patrick's
Day

Hi, my name is Kaleb.
My favorite holiday is St. Patrick's Day because it's near my birthday, and green is my favorite color.

History

We celebrate Saint Patrick's Day each year on March 17th. The holiday has everyone wearing green. Did you know that Saint Patrick's name at birth was Maewyn Succat? He became "Patrick" after he became a priest. He believed that it was his calling bring people to Christianity. He used the shamrock, which looks like a three-leafed clover, to help explain the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Today many people wear a shamrock to commemorate Saint Patrick's Day.

Patrick died on March 17 in 461 AD. That day has been celebrated as St. Patrick's Day ever since. The first year St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in this country was 1737 in Boston, Massachusetts. As they say, on this day "everybody is Irish!"

Games, and riddles for the family!

Three St. Patrick's Recipes

St. Patrick's Day Punch
Ingredients:
1/2 gallon lime sherbet
2 liter 7-up or Sprite

Let the sherbet soften in the refrigerator for about 1 to 2 hours before preparing. Mix sherbet & soda in punch bowl or large mixing bowl with a hand mixer on medium speed until well blended. Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator. The kids love it when I make this and Shamrock cookies with green icing! I've also been known to add some green food coloring to scrambled eggs for breakfast - then we have to read "Green Eggs and Ham"!Submitted by Carol Welch

 Soda Bannock - Fruit Bread
Ingredients:

8 ounces of flour (2 cups)
1 level teaspoon of salt
1 level teaspoon of cream of Tartar
1 level teaspoon of baking soda

Buttermilk (about 1/8 liter)
1/2 ounce butter (1/8 of a stick)
1/2 ounce sugar (1/8 cup)
optional: 1 oz dried fruit (1/4 cup, traditionally raisins)

Sieve the flour, salt, cream of Tartar and baking soda.
Rub in the butter with your fingertips.
Add the sugar and raisins, mix well.
Mix in a small amount of buttermilk to form a wet dough - the amount is about 1/8 of a liter box of buttermilk. You should be able to pick up and handle the dough, but it should also be pretty damp and stretch easily.
Dust a countertop with flour and knead the dough a little (the fun part of bread making!).
Then form the dough into an oval shape a couple of inches high, roll it in flour and place it in a floured baking pan.
Flatten it to about 1 - 1/2 inches height with the backs of your hands in the pan.
Bake for half an hour at 350 F. Check that the center is cooked with a toothpick before you take it out.

Blarney Stone
Blarney Castle is located in County Cork, Ireland, and built in 1446 by Cormac Laidhim McCarthy. The Blarney stone is located in the southern tower wall near the main castle In order to kiss the stone one has to lie on their back and bend backward, and downward holding iron bars for support. It is said that the Blarney stone has magical powers. As legend has it an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and nicely.
