Storms

Kaleb

In chapter 14 in The Way to Rainy Mountain by N. Scott Momaday, the storyteller points out that many generations ago the Kiowa people decided to make a horse. They decided to make it out of clay. It tried it’s best to get away and when it did there was a great storm. It picked up everything all the Kiowa people was scared of the powerful storm. Now when the Kiowa people see that a storm may be heading their way they don’t get scared because they know that Man-ka-ih speaks their language.

The historian talks about there being good things that happen and there being bad things that happen but there is always something happening. Out in the Plains where the Kiowa people used to live. There were many treacherous storms so to protect yourself you needed a storm cellar. Like N. Scott Momaday talks in his own words about his grandmothers storm cellar.

Powerful winds, terrifying thunder, sky piercing lighting what do all these things have in common? They are all parts of nature’s fury. Since the begging of time there have always been storms. I have always been scared of tornados and hurricanes even though there can’t be a flood there is a slight chance of a tornado happening in Connersville. Since thunderstorms are so popular during mid spring and early fall I hate that part of the year. I used to be very scared of thunderstorms when I lived in North Carolina since the chance of there being a hurricane happening at anytime. But since we moved to Connersville it was no threat at all of there being a hurricane. Most little kids are scared of thunderstorms, hurricanes, and stuff like that. I was scared of storms until I was about 8 years old. All that I am scared of now is tornados and floods. I wouldn’t want to live in Texas where there are a lot of tornados all year around. I want to live in Los Angeles, California because there are few hurricanes and no tornados. But there are a lot of earthquakes in Los Angeles. Even though earthquakes can kill people I still say that tornados are more destructive than earthquakes. What’s really scary is the thought of being picked up by a tornado. So I am not going to live in Tornado Valley or on the East coast because of hurricanes. I compare the storms of the horse the Kiowa people made to the storms today.

Since the begging of time there have always been storms. And there was no way to predict them. But today we can predict storms 1 day to several days at a time.
