MemoriesDustinThe historian points out how Mammedaty looked in the single photograph of him. Momaday speaking in his own voice points out that Mammedaty saw four incredible things. One was the top of the child’s head. Another was tracks of a water beast; the third was three little alligators sitting on a log. The final was a squirrel that blew parts of the ground out of its mouth to make a hole. One day in February, in the middle of the night the phone rang; my mom answered it. She started to get real sad as the call went on and even started to cry. After the phone call was over my mom got my sister and me out of bed and told us to get in the van. First she took us to Fayette Memorial Hospital and while she went inside she told us to wait out in the van. After a couple of hours my mom came back out to the van, and my sister and I to my grandma and grandpa’s house (my mom’s parents). My mom dropped us off there while she left. My grandparents made up a place for us to sleep that night. The next morning my grandma made us breakfasts. At about noon my mom came to pick us up and on the drive home my mom told us that our grandpa (my dad’s dad) had died last night in his sleep. My mom instead of taking us home; she took us up to my grandma’s house (my Dad’s mom) where the family had met after what happened last night. When I saw my dad my mom told me not to say anything to him about last night. Memories are very important to everyone. They were important to the Kiowa’s and they are important to you and me. Memories help us to remember the mistakes and triumphs that we have made and the mistake and triumphs of the people before us. The story that I wrote was one of my most powerful memories. |
