In chapter five it talks about how important food is, especially to pregnant women. Then one day the sun went away, so the mother got mad and dug up a root that the sun told her never to go near. Then she had a child, and the people of her villge were still far off. When the sun came home he remembered the bush and went to where it grew. There he saw the women and child hanging and since she wasn't dead yet he threw a ring and struck her dead. Then the suns child was all alone.
The historian says the pomme blanche or pomme de prairie is the bush they got roots from. They said it's a healthful food and is a subsitute for the potato. An anthropoligist named Mooney wrote that the Kiowas were known to be hunters not cultivators.
Momaday says he remembers a time when he was a small boy he saw some Indians kill a calf and one of the boys held the liver and ate it raw. He said the liver and the tounge were one of their delicacies.
One of my favorite types of foods is original Italian pizza. When I use to live in Italy my mom and dad would take my brother and I out to eat. Usually we would go on weekends about once a week, or so. One of the pizzas which I usually ordered was called calzone. It's a regular margarita pizza, but it's folded over and is made with mozzarella cheese rather than the regular used cheese. usually mushrooms are added but I always told them to hold them, I thought it ruined the whole pizza. Another pizza that my father would always get is called salame piccante; hot salame. It had hot salame and other spices which made it one of the best.
Every pizza in Italy has really thin crust so you have to eat it with a fork and knife rather than your hands. The tomato sauce and cheese used in Italy is just so good you can't imagine the taste until you've had it. Also they take the pizza with a shovel looking thing about the size of a rake and gently place it in the center of a large built-in stove. You could never acually know what it's like until you've had one.
Every culture has its different delicacies. Even if you think it's gross. to them at certain times it may be the greatest thing they ever have. So don't say you don't like something until youve tried it.
