Fire

Tyler

In chapter XII The Way to Rainy Mountain, the three voices are tied together by fire. The storyteller emphasizes how intelligent these mystical creatures are. He emphasizes how these creatures mesmerized a kid into feeding them. When the child’s mother comes to know of this, she is frightened and fearful for the lives of her husband and her child. She thinks of a plan to use fire for her family to escape. She then sets fire to the meat she gave her child and gets a safe distance away from the house. As a sigh of relief; she hears the cries of her dying enemies.

The historian points out how a tipi was destroyed by fire during the winter of 1872-1873. The tipi was very special and its name is Do-giagya guat, which means “tipi with battle pictures.”

Momaday, speaking in his own words, talks about how one afternoon he was walking and saw some brush on fire. He then talks about how the earth stands still and is startled by the fire.

When I was little, my parents were separated, and I lived with my mom and grandma. My dad told me that one day he was baking baked beans and decided to go to sleep. Before he went to sleep, he checked the beans to see if they were ok and went off to take a nap. About half an hour later he awoke to the smell of smoke and saw a big black cloud of smoke hovering above his head. He quickly jumped up and saw that the stove was completely engulfed in flames. He also saw that the roof had caught fire so, he got a fan to clear out the smoke that was inside and he also opened the front door. We had a wireless phone, so my dad took the phone outside and called the fire department. My dad also called my mom who was tending to me at my grandma’s. My mom started to freak out and hurried out to my house, but left me at my grandma’s house.

When my mom got there, the firemen had already put the fire out. My mom was very angry with my dad, but he didn’t seem to care. The insurance company had to pay our landlord for the damage, but he had to use the money to repair our home. After it was fixed, my parents decided to get back together and now our house is fantastic.

My dad had to find out the hard way the power of fire, and it almost cost him his life. The Kiowa people knew of this power and were grateful every time a spark came off the flint. The Kiowa people were very happy with fire because it cooked their buffalo meat and provided warmth on cold winter days. The Kiowa people also knew the destructive power of fire, as in words of the historian and Momaday. The Kiowa people learned to look past the destructiveness of fire look forward to using its graces of it. Both my dad and the Kiowa people have felt the compassion of fire and now pass their stories on to the next generation.
