power of words
samantha
In chapter VIII of The Way To Rainy Mountain written by N Scott Momaday the reading was about words. Words have a special power over people. Words can make you happy; words can make you sad; and they also could make you upset or mad.
The storyteller talked about how the twins used the word “thain-mom” to protect themselves.
The historian talked about how a word has power in and of itself. For example, the Kiowas never spoke the names of those who are dead.
When Aho heard, said or thought something bad said “zei-dl-bei” to help keep the evil away.
When I was in the 2nd grade I got up and ready for school. That day I had a feeling that that day was going to be a bad day. When the class went to recess, we all played tag. Then we got back inside, and it was time for lunch. There was a boy in my class named Josh. He always had a temper. Well, when we got to lunch some one called him stupid. He got so mad he got so mad he threw his lunch tray. It hit Ashley and me, and he got in trouble.
After the lecture he came back to class. Some one else said something mean to him, and he lost it again. This time he didn’t have food to throw. He pushed his desk over, and it landed on Brittany. She started crying, and he was in trouble again. This time the teacher called home. Josh’s mom came to school and got him. After that nobody called Josh stupid.
So you see, words do have power. They can be very powerful. Like in this problem Josh was called stupid many times and the power of the word took over and Josh got upset.
So we learned the hard way of the power of words, unlike the Kiowas. They already knew the power of words. They thought it was disrespectful and dishonest to speak the name of the dead. They would have never called some one stupid and made them so mad like Josh.
