Spiders

Meghan

In chapter VI of The Way to Rainy Mountain, by N. Scott Momaday, they explain points about spiders. The storyteller emphasizes spiders and the way people react to them. This was a little bit into the book when they started talking about spiders. They emphasize that all bugs have to communicate in some way. The statement, “But creatures cross these roads: dung beetles and grasshoppers, sidewinders and tortoises; shows how the bugs communicate.” It tells how the big dark spiders come out at night. It tells how they come and go in the darkness. In one paragraph they call the spider “grandmother.”

The historian points out how they had came up with the name “grandmother” for the spider and their reactions to the spider.

In the third part of the chapter it seemed that Momaday got into the most detail about how all the bugs have to communicate in some way or another, and how at night the largest scariest bugs come out, and in some way seem to disappear in daylight.

I have a real bad fear of spiders. Just the looks of them scare me. Spiders are very scary looking. Big black ones are the worst. Every time I see one I take off running, and I definitely won’t kill it. I always have someone else kill it for me. One time I was at my dad’s house, and I was sitting on his bed. Then this gigantic, black spider came out of nowhere. I was terrified. I jumped out of the room and screamed for my dad.

By that time it was already gone. I was way too scared out to go back in there for a while. No one did find the spider either. Spiders can hide in the littlest cracks too. That really scares me. I don’t know wear spiders originated, but I do know they are good for some things. They are good for killing other unwanted bugs. Larger bugs kill spiders also. Spiders are good for things but also not so good for things. Personally, I would just rather not have them around. Yes they help us, but, no, they don’t when they’re in your house.

There are different types of spiders in this world. I guess I never really realized that until I read this book and wrote about this chapter. Even those who hate spiders seem to appreciate them one way or another. While spiders seem scary and creepy, they live on earth just like us, and we should appreciate them more because they help us more than we realize. This relates to the Kiowa people because in the story they discover spiders also and learnt appreciate them.
