Storms

Caleb

In chapter XIV of The Way to Rainy Mountain by Scott N. Momaday all three stories are connected by storms. The stories are showing how kiowa thought about the storms changed. How thier knowledge about storms advances as time went on.

The Kiowa made a horse out of clay. While they were making the horse something went terribly and it started a horrible storm. It became the head of a horse which lighting flew out of and a tail of a fish, which whipped around to make whirl winds. It ended all fine and now the Kiowa know it is going to be all right when storms come.

The weather at Rainy Mountain changes rapidly.

There is a storm cellar at Momaday's grandma's house that has been there as long as he can remember. He said it would be there after the house is gone.

I was four when my family decide to go on vaction. I was excited; this would be my first vaction. My parents decided to go to Myrtle Beach in South Caroline. It would be a sixteen-hour trip and we would have to travle though the Smokey Mountain.

My mom and dad loaded the van with all our belongings we would need for the one week vaction. We left early in the morning, and it was damp out. While we were diving, we got caught in two tremendous traffic jams that caused the drive to take almost a fully day to get there. In minutes the sky turned pitch black during the second traffic jam and the rain began to fall with strong winds that shaked the car sidewards faster than we moved along forward. A massive storm passed overhead and drenched all of our items we had strapped to the top of the van. I was scared to death. After four long hours finally the fraffic jam was over and everyone was relieved.

We continued to travel southeast on our journey to Myrtle Beach. While we were on the road we drove through towering mountains. At the time I was to believe they were just big hills until my parents explained that they were the Great Smoky Mountains. The road wound around and through the mountains. It seemed as though the mountains would never end.

Finally we reached the mountaintops and it was like we were at eye level with the clouds. It was as though we were in the sky. After enjoying the view we began our trip down the mountains headed straight for the beach. Twenty-one long hours later, we had reached our destination.

We have learned many things about storms over the years. How the weather effect how bad the storms are. Also were it is make a difference. As technology advances, our knowledge of the storms advance. In years to come I think we will be able to predict the weather for years ahead.
