Horses and Hunting
Justin
In chapter 20 of The Way to Rainy Mountain by Scott N. Momaday talks about horses and hunting.
A man who owned a fine hunting horse, lost his horse because it charged upon an enemy.
In 1861 a Sun Dance was held in Arkansas where a horse was tied up to a pole in a medicine lodge and it starved to death. Later in the year a small epidemic of smallpox broke out within the tribe.
The old man Gaapitan and his horse said if he gets the lives of his family, he will give the life of his black-eared horse.
Speaking of hunting and horses, I am a hunter myself. I go hunting quite a bit; there was one time i rode my horse in the woods, tied her to a tree, and went hunting. I didn't see any deer, so I headed back home.
I usually never bring my horse; I just walk back or ride the quad. I use my climbing treestand. I like morning hunts and evening hunts just as well. Even when the first snow falls, that is one of the best times to hunt. The deer are very active and are less spooked-makes for good hunts.
My family likes to hunt alot; we are big time hunters. My dad has been hunting since he was a kid, and has alot of trophies. We harvested two bucks and one doe last year. We use them for meat and process them. Then we use the bucks for trophies and meat. It is good venison; I like the jerky the best.
Hunting has been around for an awful long time. That is how every human being decided to live. Back in the day the Kiowa Had to use horses for hunting, traveling, and just doing every thing. Now we don't need horses for all those needs. we have cars, quads, and treestands for hunting. Horses are still a good source of transportation.
